Nano-structured surfaces on Ni–Ti generated by multiple shots of interfering femtosecond laser

Combined periodic structures composed of micron-sized periodic structure and nano-sized quasi periodic structure were generated on Ni–Ti target by multiple shots of interfering femtosecond laser beams. The micron-sized structure was generated by the interference pattern of four beams, and the nano-sized quasi period was generated due to the multiple shot effect of femtosecond laser. The structures were investigated in detail by two-dimensional fast Fourier transform (2D-FFT). The power spectra showed small spots and fuzzy spots due to precise period and quasi period, respectively. The most major size of the quasi periodic structure was 580 nm.     

Control of light pulse propagation with only a few cold atoms in a high-finesse microcavity

Propagation of a light pulse through a high-Q optical microcavity containing a few cold atoms (N<10) in its cavity mode is investigated experimentally. With less than ten cold rubidium atoms launched into an optical microcavity, up to 170 ns propagation lead time ("superluminal"), and 440 ns propagation delay time (subluminal) are observed. Comparison of the experimental data with numerical simulations as well as future experiments are discussed.     

Temperature dependence of the dynamic interstitial interactions in potassium bromide

Formation of the H and H_A centers in Na⁺-doped KBr within the time constant of the thermal annihilation of the H center is measured between 80 and 200K and it is shown that the volume of the interaction of the radiation-induced replacement sequence of an interstitial halogen with a Na⁺ impurity increases with an activation energy of (0.025 ± 0.005) eV as the temperature rises.     

Electric conductivities of 1:1 electrolytes in liquid methanol along the liquid-vapor coexistence curve up to the critical temperature. I. NaCl, KCl, and CsCl solutions

The molar conductivities Lambda of NaCl, KCl, and CsCl in liquid methanol were measured in the concentration range of (0.3-2.0) x 10(-3) mol dm(-3) and the temperature range of 60-240 degrees C along the liquid-vapor coexistence curve. The temperature range corresponds to the solvent density range of (2.78-1.55)rhoc, where rhoc = 0.2756 g cm(-3) is the critical density of methanol. The concentration dependence of Lambda at each temperature and density (pressure) has been analyzed by the Fuoss-Chen-Justice equation to obtain the limiting molar conductivity Lambda0 and the molar association constant KA. For all the electrolytes studied, Lambda0 increased almost linearly with decreasing density at densities above 2.0rhoc, while the opposite tendency was observed at lower densities. The relative contribution of the nonhydrodynamic effect on the translational friction coefficient zeta was estimated in terms of Deltazeta/zeta, where the residual friction coefficient Deltazeta is the difference between zeta and the Stokes friction coefficient zetaS. At densities above 2.0rhoc, Deltazeta/zeta increased with decreasing density though zeta and Deltazeta decrease, and the tendencies are common for all the ions studied. The density dependences of zeta and Deltazeta/zeta were explained well by the Hubbard-Onsager (HO) dielectric friction theory based on the sphere-in-continuum model. At densities below 2.0rhoc, however, the experimental results cannot be explained by the HO theory.     

Novel stereoselective entry to 2'-beta-carbon-substituted 2'-deoxy-4'-thionucleosides from 4-thiofuranoid glycals

2'-Beta-methyl- and 2'-beta-hydroxymethyl-2'-deoxy-4'-thionucleosides have been synthesized through PhSeCl-mediated electrophilic glycosidation using 4-thiofuranoid glycals having carbon substituents at the C2-position as a glycosyl donor. Preparation of these glycals were carried out by means of the C2 lithiation of 1-chloro-4-thiofuranoid glycal with LTMP followed by the Birch reduction of the chlorine atom. An improved large scale synthesis of 1,4-anhydro-4-thio-d-ribitol

An improved large scale synthesis of 1,4-anhydro-4-thio-d-ribitol (4) from d-ribose has been accomplished by combining the O-allyl and O-p-methoxybenzyl protecting groups. Compound 4 was obtained in 31% yield in eight steps with three chromatographic separations.     

Adsorbed water for the electro-oxidation of methanol at Pt-Ru alloy

Adsorbed water molecules which promote the methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) at Pt-Ru alloy electrode are clearly detected by in-situ FTIR spectroscopy with the attenuated total reflection configuration, which directly supports the "bi-functional mechanism" for the MOR.     

‘Calixarene-like’ chiral amine macrocycles as novel chiral shift reagents for carboxylic acids

Chiral macrocyclic amine 2 was found to be useful as an NMR chiral shift reagent for the determination of the enantiomeric purity and absolute configurations of several kinds of carboxylic acid and amino acid derivatives.
